David
Stanley makes multi-layered ambiguous paintings that originate
from study of the reflective surfaces of lakes, rivers or
wet beaches. The word “reflective” here is also
ambiguous for as well as reflecting light the surfaces give
pause to consider just what it is that we perceive. Are
we looking through the surface or at the surface? Or on
the surface itself; is it something floating, semi-submerged,
a shadow or are there reflections of clouds or trees? Viewers
decide and, of course, on contemplation as their mood might
change, so might their interpretation. Resultingly, the
paintings are always interesting.
