Wigan Walks.

The inspiration for this series of photographs was a thirst to uncover, record and preserve the disappearing face of Wigan and to demonstrate the beauty we have right on our doorstep.

I have always been fascinated by the architecture that surrounds us in our everyday lives, which makes us who we are and I’ m constantly looking for details in the landscape, which are normally missed as we pass by.

Here little pieces of Wigan’s heritage are taken out of context creating a puzzle for the viewer hopefully impelling them to search out these snippets of the past but also to discover new ones.

I utilize reflections, shadows, pattern and unexpected angles to create a diverse way of viewing familiar scenes.

Kathryn graduated from The University of Bolton in 2004 with a 1st class BA Hons Degree in Visual Art. She originates from Wigan and won the 2D Prize at the 2005 Wigan Borough Open ‘Objects of Desire’.

Through the medium of digital photography Kathryn ‘ tries to make sense of her past’. She sees objects, surfaces and places as containers of information. Her work concerns recording, preserving and uncovering local histories in the hope of activating memories and emotions for the viewer and herself. She is also very interested in how health can be promoted through art and has had commissions for the new Ince and Worsley Mesnes Health Centres in the Wigan area.

History of Exhibition and Projects (Selected)
Kathryn Boyd

After working for 20 years at Lloyds TSB Bank I studied at Wigan College of Art and then at Bolton University where I graduated in July 2004 with a 1st Class BA Hons in Visual Art, proving it’s never too late to do something different with your life.

I am very interested in how health can be promoted through art and have been involved with research for artworks at the new Ince and Worsley Mesnes Health Centres, situated in the Wigan area, where some of my own work is on display.

I am also concerned with recording, preserving and uncovering local histories and consequently I have taken hundreds of photographs of local areas many of which were taken on the ‘Art Walks’ I do with an organisation who helps support people with mental health problems by introducing them to a number of activities, including art. (This involves showing people how to use a digital camera and how to load and manipulate their images on the PC).

I won the 2D prize at The Wigan Open in 2005 and have had some success in exhibiting my work e.g. a solo exhibition this year at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton, Lancs. to complement the Arthur Miller play ‘A View from the Bridge’.

At the moment I'm working with Wigan's homeless, taking photos of local areas and documenting their lives. Finally some of my work is on display at Pye Studios , Market Street, Hindley.
